Your Mind Is Faster Than You Think - And That's Why Talking (and Counselling) Helps

Have you ever felt like your mind is running ahead of you?

Like your thoughts are piling up faster than you can make sense of them?

You’re not imagining it.

Most of us think at around 1,000–4,000 words per minute.

That’s the equivalent of reading several pages of text… every single minute… inside your own head.

Now compare that to how fast we speak.

Around 125–400 words per minute.

That’s not just slower—it’s a completely different pace of experience.

And that gap is where counselling starts to work.

The Problem Isn’t Your Thoughts — It’s the Speed

Woman with worrying thoughts above her head.

When your mind is moving that quickly, it’s no wonder things feel overwhelming.

Thoughts blur together. Feelings get tangled. Everything feels urgent and true all at once.

You might recognise this:

  • “I don’t even know what I’m feeling anymore.”

  • “My mind won’t switch off.”

  • “There’s just too much going on in my head.”

The issue isn’t that you don’t understand yourself.

It’s that your thoughts are moving too fast to be understood.

Here’s the Shift Most People Don’t Expect

The moment you start talking… everything slows down.

Not slightly.

Dramatically.

From thousands of words per minute… down to a few hundred.

And suddenly, something different becomes possible.

You have to choose your words.

You can’t say everything at once. You can’t stay vague. You can’t skip over meaning.

You begin to ask:

  • What am I actually trying to say?

  • What do I really mean by this?

  • What am I feeling underneath all of this?

And in that moment, your thoughts start to organise themselves.

This is why talking helps.

Not because someone gives you answers—but because you start to hear yourself clearly.

From Overwhelm to Clarity

People often arrive in counselling saying something like:

“I’m just really stressed.”

But when we slow things down, something powerful happens.

That “stress” begins to unfold:

  • “I feel under pressure at work because I don’t feel supported.”

  • “I’m worried I’m going to let people down.”

  • “I don’t feel like I’m allowed to say no.”

Same person. Same experience.

But now it’s clearer. More specific. More real.

And once something becomes clear, it becomes something you can work with.

The Power of Being Heard in Counselling

There’s another layer to this.

It’s not just about talking—it’s about being heard properly.

In everyday life, conversations are often rushed, interrupted, or focused on solutions.

In counselling, it’s different.

You have space. You’re not judged. You’re not being “fixed.”

You’re listened to.

And when someone really listens, something shifts.

You start to listen to yourself differently too.

Want to Go Even Deeper? Write It Down.

A man writes in his journal. He has a cup of coffee in hand.

If speaking slows your thinking… writing slows it even more.

We write at around 20–40 words per minute.

That’s incredibly slow compared to how fast we think.

And that’s exactly why it works.

Because when you write, you can’t keep up with every thought.

You have to choose.

  • This word or that one?

  • Is this actually what I mean?

  • What’s underneath this sentence?

Writing forces precision.

It turns a flood of thoughts into something focused, intentional, and often surprisingly revealing.

The Real “Wow” Moment

Here’s the part most people don’t expect:

You don’t need to stop your thoughts to feel better.

You just need to slow them down enough to understand them.

That’s it.

Not fixing everything. Not having all the answers.Just creating enough space for meaning to emerge.

And once meaning is there… things begin to shift naturally.

You Don’t Have to Untangle This Alone

If your mind feels busy, overwhelming, or hard to make sense of, you’re not alone.

And you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.

Counselling offers a space where:

  • Your thoughts can slow down

  • Your feelings can be understood

  • Your words can take shape

  • And you can begin to hear yourself clearly

Take the First Step

If this resonates with you, that’s often a sign something is ready to be explored.

You don’t need to have it all figured out before you start.

You just need a place to begin.

Get in touch today to book an initial session or ask any questions.

Or start small—try writing your thoughts down and notice what changes when you slow them down.

Either way, you’re already beginning the process.
